Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, the newest addition to Viceroy Hotels & Resorts, has been featured in Forbes for its innovative approach to Algarve travel. Set away from the typical beach resorts, this luxurious retreat offers a fresh perspective on the region, focusing on the rich nature and culture of southern Portugal’s interior. Forbes highlights the resort’s unique location in the Barrocal region, a landscape of rolling hills filled with fig, olive, and cork trees, which contrasts with the region’s well-known coastal allure.

Opened in October 2024, the resort anchors the Ombria development and marks Viceroy’s debut in Western Europe. The design of the property, created by WATG and Promontorio, resembles a traditional hillside village with whitewashed buildings and a towering clock tower, giving it a distinctive charm that embraces the essence of local culture. Its 141 rooms, arranged in three- story buildings, are linked by picturesque walking paths and feature elements of local Portuguese design, from handcrafted rugs to vintage furnishings.

“We wanted to create something that reflects the slow, traditional way of life here,” said Duarte Gonçalves da Cunha, General Manager of Viceroy at Ombria Algarve. “It’s a completely different experience, and we believe it offers guests a more immersive connection to this beautiful region
of Portugal.”

The Forbes article further highlights the resort’s dedication to sustainability and luxury. Guests can enjoy activities like year-round golf on a signature course designed by Jorge Santana da Silva, set against a backdrop of ancient trees and rivers. With four swimming pools (three heated) and a central gathering plaza, Viceroy at Ombria Algarve invites relaxation and community interaction in a peaceful environment away from the traditional Algarve beach crowds.
Gastronomy is another key draw at the resort. The article praises Solalua, the hotel’s most ambitious dining venue, offering a creative menu that reinvents local classics. From savory crab-filled bolas de Berlim to Iberian pork dishes and a curated selection of local wines at Bellvino, the resort’s culinary offerings promise an elevated taste of Portuguese cuisine.

In addition to its world-class dining, the resort features a holistic wellness experience, with plans for a lavish spa opening in March. Until then, guests can immerse themselves in local culture through activities like basket weaving with local artisans or honey tasting with third-generation beekeepers.

For those eager to experience both the land and sea, the beach is only a half-hour drive away, ensuring guests can explore the Algarve’s renowned coastline while enjoying the peaceful inland atmosphere that Viceroy at Ombria Algarve uniquely offers.
