Ombria Algarve has officially marked its grand opening with a ceremony that celebrates not only a milestone for the resort, but also a new era for a modern luxury destination and responsible tourism in Portugal.

Recognised as a Project of Potential National Interest (PIN), Ombria Algarve stands as a pioneering destination where nature, community and innovation coalesce. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Algarve barrocal, the resort is the culmination of over 20 years of vision and commitment by Pontos Group. “This is a long-awaited day,” said Ilpo Kokkila, Chairman of Pontos Group and the project's founding visionary. “Ombria has been designed to integrate harmoniously with the local community and natural surroundings, a sanctuary of wellbeing that grows, renews, and continually redefines the standard for residential and hospitality excellence in Portugal and Southern Europe.”

The ceremony, conducted in Portuguese by journalist Carla Ascenção, welcomed international and national guests, including Portugal’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, Pedro Machado. Commending Ombria’s long-term vision, he described it as “an example of how a modern luxury destination can generate positive impact, preserve territorial identity and attract a more conscious and discerning traveller.”

Patrick Freeman, CEO of Ombria, further emphasised the project's aspirations: “We aim to create a year-round destination that blends modern luxury with authenticity, reinforcing Portugal’s standing as a world-class destination. This is a commitment to mindful growth, fully aligned with the land and the people who shape it.”

Held amidst the breathtaking natural beauty of the Loulé hills, the event was not only a celebration of architectural and environmental excellence but also a showcase of the values that underpin Ombria Algarve: nature, wellness, community, innovation and conscious luxury. Guests enjoyed immersive experiences ranging from live artistic performances and wellness rituals to culinary interpretations of regional flavours by resident chefs Pedro Pinto and Jean-Michel Rodrigues.

In keeping with its strong environmental and social ethos, the event featured exclusively local talent and was entirely carbon neutral, with emissions offset through certified projects, reaffirming Ombria Algarve’s commitment to leading by example and advancing sustainable practices in tourism and real estate.

The inauguration also highlighted the launch of the 5-star Viceroy at Ombria Algarve hotel, featuring 141 rooms, suites and branded residences, a holistic spa, five restaurants and bars, a conference centre and an internationally awarded and GEO Foundation-certified 18-hole golf course. Alongside it, Ombria Algarve’s real estate offering includes the Viceroy Residences, Alcedo Villas and Oriole Village, each designed to reflect the elegance of modern living in harmony with the land.

As the Algarve continues to evolve as a destination, the opening of Ombria Algarve represents a defining moment: a new benchmark for those who seek to live, invest and experience the region in a way that is authentic, timeless and enduring.
